As mentioned from the previous post, the next match was against Astana in the Quarter-Finals of the Kazakhstan Cup.
Sadly, our dream run might be coming to an end as we will face current league leaders Kairat in the Semi-Finals.
In the league, we drew 2-2 with Taraz before losing 2-1 away to Atyrau. I found that result disappointing as we were the better team on paper and basically underestimated them. Regardless, we bounced back with a dominating 5-0 win against Kaisar, with our star striker, Patrick, scoring 4 goals in that match alone.
We then drew against league leaders, Kairat, at home before achieving the same result away at Altay.
Unfortunately, in that match, Balan fractured his arm and although he can play with a cast, I decided to send him to the club doctor for a month, allowing Shalyshkin to play a more important role in the center of our defence.
At this point, we were in 7th, and somehow, Astana, who had been struggling all season, was the team that stands in our way for a spot in the top half.
Just a note that in this league: goal difference means nothing, they first sort the team based on the number of wins. Clearly, the high number of draws were costing us at this stage…
Despite having some of our players, such as Danilov, under intense scrutiny from other clubs, I decided not to sign anyone else in the second transfer window. and only let a few more (young) wingers go.
From then on, it all went downhill.
First, Lyubenov got injured again and this time, he was out for three months with torn knee ligaments!
Then, we lost to Shakther 2-1 at home, despite a strong performance from Sai.
It gets worse.
Before our last game against Aktobe, we were forced to play only one striker. Our hopes of finishing in the top half were virtually over.
We ended up in 9th(?!) and Astana did end up in the top half of the season. Really frustrating to end up in the relegation stage again.
Development of Players Part 2
Here’s how three of our hottest prospects are looking in this blog post.
- Patrick – Although he missed the last match against Aktobe, he still managed to score 9 goals in the seven matches he has played in. Let’s disregard his off-color performance against Atyrau – He only got a rating of 6.1! Valuewise, his stock has increased to £100,000!
- Shalyshkin – Hasn’t developed as much as I hoped for this time around. Decided to extend his contract for another 2 years.
- Mishkin – His form had dropped off a bit, but he’s still developing, so that’s a positive.
That’s all for now. Tune in next time where we aim to avoid relegation (again).
